Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy is undergoing a metamorphosis, combining with an Arctic low cold front at the Jet Stream to form FRANKENSTORM, or the storm of the century as it may later be known.  Hurricane Sandy, uncharacteristic of most hurricanes, chose a very unique route because of the deep arctic low and the resulting curvature of the jet stream, which pulled it in.

Frankenstorm

Hurricane Sandy Frankenstorm signifies the metamorphosis the storm is undergoing as it meets the cold front, with warm tropical air clashing against the cold winds from the north. The result is deep downdrafts and resulting high winds even above those seen within the hurricane. Those winds will be experienced in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, New York and in parts of New England and Canada. Feet of snow will fall upon the mountains of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York and parts of New England. Feet of rain are falling on New Jersey. Storm surges are reaching record heights along the Jersey shore and on Long Island and Manhattan New York, and Connecticut.

The final phase for many will be power outages, and given the densely populated region this storm is striking, a great span of New England may be debilitated. The economic impact could be substantial as well.
